Isis Eyed By Pfizer- But Turned Down

FeaturesBy Steven Turner
Last Update: 11:31 AM ET Nov 21, 2008

In February of 2007, shortly after Isis (ISIS) announced its multibillion dollar, collaboration with Genzyme (GENZ), a senior executive of Pfizer (PFE) was chided, asking how they could let rival Genzyme outbid them for the rights to Mipomersen. The Pfizer executive pointed out that the mode of delivery was the key factor in their decision.

This reluctance on Pfizer’s part was understandable in light of the disastrous multibillion-dollar loss with “the sure thing,” Nektar’s (NKTR) inhaled insulin product, which nobody wanted to buy. This fiasco was unfolding while Pfizer and 10 other pharmaceutical companies were engaged in a bidding war to acquire the rights to Mipomersen.

FlashHelp™ - The Next Generation of On-Line Help

Features

By the Midwest Technology Journal Staff

The notion that the Web can be made so intuitive that it doesn't need do*****entation is destroying Web user's abilities to accomplish even the simplest tasks in an online environment. The typical scenario is that a Web user enters a Web site or Web application, not to simply browse around, but to complete a specific task. When the user is unable to complete their task they then look for further assistance from the area they are working. Many designers have learned to add a help icon or button after years of using desktop software and users have learned to utilize these buttons.

First isolated in South African Terns in 1961, the virus has become more deadly due to genetic drift over the last decade. Initially, the virus circulated among wild birds without causing morbidity. The virus became extremely contagious and in the past several years has rapidly infected birds over a wide geographic region including Japan, Laos, China, Honk Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, South Korea, and most recently North Korea.

My Computer is Running Slowly, Do I Have a Virus?

Features By C. Kent Lissa

This is probably the most often asked question I hear when someone learns that I'm a computer techie. The first question I ask in return is, "Exactly what about the computer is running slowly?" More often than not, the answer is speed over the Internet, especially using a dial-up connection. Gee, imagine that. But, even with a broadband connection the Internet runs slowly sometimes. It's all related to the 'health' of the Internet. Just like rush hour traffic, it's going to run slow at times, and for very similar reasons.

H5N1 Virus: The Next Pandemic

FeaturesSteven A. Turner MD MBA

When the great influenza pandemic started in Haskell County, Kansas, in January 1918, people lived in relatively geographically isolated regions. It was a rural community with farmers tending to raising chickens, pigs and cattle. There wasn’t the prevalence of mass transportation in the form of cars, planes, and buses that exist today. Rarely did a farmer travel to the city. There simply was no incentive for frivolous travel; transportation over long distances was difficult and tedious. Roads were unpaved muddy obstacle courses and the horsepower one relied on for locomotion was from the real thing.
